Hearsay
As you may know “Hearsay” refers to an out-of-court statement offered for the truth of the matter asserted. In Jurisight, we use “Hearsay” to teach a fundamental mindfulness principal about the nature of our thoughts. Hearsay is an out of the mind declaration offered for the truth of the matter asserted. It reminds us that our thoughts are not necessarily accurate portrayals of reality. As in the courtroom, there is a reason to exclude hearsay – it just isn’t that reliable. So it can be with our thoughts, especially when we are “out of our mind” with worry. Consider the number of times you’ve told yourself something that caused distress only to find that your concern never materialized or wasn’t as bad as you thought. It can be helpful to remember Mark Twain’s observation that he had a great many troubles in his life, most of which never happened.
So, the next time you find yourself anxiously uttering words like “Oh no . . . .” consider that the statement might be hearsay. Is it the whole truth and nothing but the truth or might it be more worrisome mental chatter? Silently acknowledge, “Objection, Hearsay!” and let go of the thought. To help, bring awareness to your breathing, feeling the rise and fall of your belly. Look around, taking in the sights and sounds, the smells, the tastes, and the feel of the moment. Wake up!
